USB 4 Version 2.0 Will Provide Twice Faster Data Transfer

USB 4 Version 2.0 Will Provide Twice Faster Data Transfer

With every generation of USB technology, the transfer speed gets faster. This is logical. But it increases at a very fast pace. In this regard, as the USB Promoter Group said, USB 4 version 2.0 will support a transfer speed of up to 80 Gbps. This is twice the original USB 4 and even Thunderbolt 4.

However, there is no official information concerning the new standard. But what we get from the Promoter Group makes us thinks that USB 4 version 2.0 cables will use the USB-C connector. As said above, the upcoming standard will make a revolution in wired data transfer.

“Key characteristics of the updated USB4 solution include: Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables”.

USB 4 Version 2.0 Supports 80Gbps Speed

In fact, Joe Balich, a spokesperson for the USB-IF, didn’t explain how this could happen technically. But he said that “this benefit was made a requirement when the new specification was developed, and the specifics as to how 80Gbps signaling is accomplished will be disclosed once the final specification is released.”

Also, we know that the USB-C and power delivery specs will also be updated. Otherwise, it won’t support a higher level of data performance.

USB 4 Version 2.0 Will Provide Twice Faster Data Transfer

Besides this, the USB 4 version 2.0 parameters will also provide faster performance when using USB 3.2, DisplayPort, and PCIe.

Lastly, there is a little confusion referring to the name. We mean USB 3.2 has different standards:

  • USB 3.2 Gen 1 (aka original USB 3.0);
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2;
  • USB 3.2 Gen 1×2;
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps).

So if the transfer speed of the new standard is twice faster than that of the original USB 4, why does it still carry the name USB 4 version 2.0?

Anyway, as the new standard is on the way. So it's better to wait for it rather than buy the original standard, which provides a much slower speed.
