TSMC denies pressure from the U.S. government to set up factories in the U.S.

In response to reports that the US is pressuring TSMC to set up factories in the United States, the chairman of TSMC said that TSMC is not under pressure to set up factories in the US. However, TSMC did not rule out the possibility of a factory in the US. According to the company, it will continue to evaluate the feasibility.

Earlier, there were reports that the U.S. authorities are stepping up pressure on the chip maker to require the latter to make a decision before the U.S. election, whether it can set up factories in the United States and produce military equipment in the US.

At present, TSMC has been responsible for the manufacture of chips for US F-35 fighters. However, the production link is on the island of Taiwan. The US now requires the chipmaker to bring its production line to the US. Its reason(s) centers around "national security" considerations.

In response, according to Taiwan ’s “Economic Daily” report, TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin presided over the meeting on the 16th, saying that the company was not under pressure by the US to set up factories in the United States. TSMC will depend on customers' needs to determine its production location. It depends on the market demand and the economic environment. There is no particular pressure on which side TSMC should set up a factory for production.

Huang Renzhao, TSMC's chief financial officer, said that the company had considerable growth in the mainland market last year and will continue this year, especially 5G and AI. Chinese customers are a big driving force. At present, TSMC's more than 400 customers, previously accounting for a quarter of Chinese customers, have not changed much.
