Huawei To Use Apple-like 3D Light Module In 2019

No doubt, the iPhone X has popularized some ideas like the notch in the smartphone industry even though it was not exactly the first smartphone to use this feature. As of now, many Android smartphone makers are adopting the notch design but the superb facial recognition feature of the iPhone X has not been considered by any Android smartphone maker because of its high cost of production. However, KGI Securities analyst, Guo Mingchi, believes that Huawei will be the first Android smartphone maker to use a 3D structured light module similar to Apple's, but we will not be seeing this till next year.

One of the most important components of this feature is the time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. Named after the aviation remote sensing technology, the depth sensor cooperates with the infrared lattice projection to calculate a three-dimensional outline information of an object (specifically a human face on a mobile phone).

Kuo predicts that the cost of production of these sensors will be greatly reduced by 2019 and more manufacturers are bound to join Huawei. This module will not only bring a convenient, efficient, and more adaptable face unlock feature, it will greatly enhance security. Huawei's upcoming flagship Huawei P20 Pro is scheduled to be released next Tuesday thus it will definitely miss this feature.
